    Julius Turner, 69 years old, a Civil War veteran and wealthy farmer of Clay City, shot his wife to death from ambush,
    seriously wounded his 15 year old son and attempted to commit suicide near Saylor Springs, Ill., on Saturday night.
    He is under arrest and refuses to partake of food, declaring he will starve himself to death.
    Turner and his wife had been separated four years. She was 20 years his junior and he was insanely jealous of her.
    The tragedy was caused by his mistaking his own son for another man.
    When he saw the youth, who is large for his age, join his mother outside a church where an entertainment was in
    progress, his jealous frenzy overmastered him, and he opened fire on the pair from his ambush.
    About 9:30 p.m. Mrs. Turner stepped from the church for a breath of air and as she did so her son, Glenn, arrived
    from the farm, where he was working. He stepped forward to greet his mother in the shadow, and they stood conversing
    there a few seconds.
    Turner, from his position in the ambush of the grove, had a distinct look at his wife as she left the church door but
    the face of his son was hidden as the boy approached from the roadway.
    He saw only vaguely the form of a man standing close to his wife, in earnest conversation, and all the jealous rage
    within him rose up and fired his mind.
    Drawing a 38 -caliber revolver, he glided to within a few feet of the couple and opened fire on them. The first
    bullet struck Mrs. Turner in the back. As she started to run another bullett struck her in the head. She died within
    fiifteen minutes.
    Then the weapon was turned on her companion, and two more shots rang out. One of the bulletts struck the son in the
    groin and he fell unconscious beside the bleeding form of his mother.
    The shots attracted the merrymakers in the church, and the farmers hurried to the scene. Turner was standing over the
    bodies of his victims, with the revolver in his hand, Glen, the wounded son, had fallen face upward. As Turner
    stooped down to look at the face of the man whom he suspected to be his wife’s admirer, he recognized his son. With a
    cry of anguish he straightened up and staggered back. Then, placing the muzzle of the revolver against his temple he
    pulled the trigger and dropped across the body of his son.
    The boy’s injury, although serious, not regarded as necessarily fatal. Turner’s wound is not a serious one. His hand shook when he fired the bullet into his temple and it glanced downward, emerging from his cheek.
    Young Turner denounced his father for the shooting, and the latter freely admitted having fired the shots. When told
    his wife was dead he said he had no regret for the act. He reproached himself for having injured his son, and said he
    had no suspicion of his identity when he shot him. He begged the boy’s forgiveness and inquired anxiously of the
    doctors if Glenn would recover. As for himself, he declared he had no further desire to live, and regretted that he
    had not killed himself instantly.
    Mrs. Mary Turner was a most estimable woman, and enjoyed the highest respect of her neighbors. She had been a
    hard-working, industrious wife and mother before the separation, and there had never been the breath of scandal to
    attach to her conduct.
    Since his arrest he has refused to partake of nourishment. He declares his purpose to starve himself to death. He is
    being closely watched to see that he does himself no serious injury.
    Prosecuting Attorney R. S. C. Reaugh was called to the scene on Sunday, but Turner’s condition was such as to cause a postponement of the preliminary examination to a later date, and the prisoner was lodge in the jail at Louisville.

    Pinkney “Pinky” Harold Fulk, age 91, of Flora, Illinois, and formerly of Bible Grove, passed away Monday morning, March 2, 2020, at Clay County Hospital.

    He was born October 15, 1928, in Clay County, Illinois, the son of Pinkney A. and Searbrina L. “Ma” (Mefford) Fulk. He was united in marriage to Sally L. Reed on July 11, 1966, and together they shared 35 years of marriage before her unexpected passing in 2001.

    Pinkney served in the US Army during World War II and was stationed in Berlin when it was bombed, though he did not speak of this often. He also served in the Korean War and was in the Police Action in Germany. He was an oilfield worker for Shelby Britton, Strickland Oil, and Tally Well Service for several years and also worked as a Union construction worker.

    For many years he served as the campground host and operated the concession and bait shop at Forbes State Park. Pinkney loved playing cards, especially pinochle with the club, and poker on the holidays. He also greatly enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, playing horseshoes, and anything to do with the outdoors and shared this love with his family and friends.

    Pinkney loved his kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, nieces, nephews, and other close family and friends with all of his heart and soul. He will be deeply missed by all of them and they will cherish the memories they have of him.

    He is survived by his sons: Tony (Lois) Fulk of Flora, Pinkney Franklin Fulk of Flora, Larry (Peggy) Pierce of LeBlanc, LA; daughters: Dianne Misselbrook of Flora, Kathy Schoonover of Effingham, Linda (Charlie) Bosley of Toledo, Margie (Terry) Moore of Louisville, Cindy (Roger) Cook of Flora, Lois Dean Martin of Louisville, Lisa Fulk (Lenny Thoele) of Montrose, and Mary Stevens of Owensboro, KY; sister-in-law: Betty Reed of Springfield; several grandchildren, along with one very special granddaughter and caretaker who would do anything he asked and who saved his life from his house fire: Diona (Andy) Griffy; and several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews also survive, along with his dog Chevy.

    He was preceded in death by his parents: Pinkney and Lois Fulk; wife: Sally Fulk; four sisters: Rose, May, Susie, and Janey; two daughters: Mary Holste and Connie Carter; a son: Robert “Boogie” Bateson; three son-in-law’s: Tom Holste, Perry Martin, and Merle Miller; a daughter-in-law: Lorraine Pierce; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his beloved dog Blaze.

    A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 8, 2020, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Interment will follow in Old Union Cemetery.

    Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday evening, March 7, and 1 p.m. until time of service on Sunday at the funeral home.

    Esther Pauline Thomason, age 92, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Sunday, November 27, 2022, at Flora Gardens Care Center.

    She was born July 27, 1930, in Olney, the daughter of Peter and Stella (Scherer) Fulk. She was united in marriage to Raymond Thomason on September 3, 1951, and together they shared 51 wedding anniversaries until his death on January 7, 2003.

    Pauline was a graduate of Richland County High School. She loved flowers, and her green thumb produced beautiful gardens year-round; taking walks until she physically could no longer do so was one of her favorite daily rituals; she loved playing Bingo with all her friends at Heritage Woods; and doing daily word search puzzles kept her busy. When she was younger, she volunteered endless hours at a local nursing home, as she loved helping others. She enjoyed getting together with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Pauline's pride and joy was that she and her husband Raymond adopted five children from Korea. After being told they could not adopt any more than three children, she appealed this decision. Congressman George Shipley from Illinois wrote a bill to eliminate the restriction on the number of children a family can adopt. Both George and Georgia were named after Congressman Shipley.

    She is survived by her children: June "Buster" Roland Thomason (Glenda Onyette) of Grayville, Eleanor Alice (Tim) Ramseier of Terre Haute, Indiana, Raymond (Jackie) Thomason Jr. of Panama City Beach, Florida, Georgia Ellen (James) Ewing of Flora, and George Edward (Samantha) Thomason of Orchardville; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a sister: Shelby Snider of Dundas; and many nieces and nephews.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter: Donna Jane Thomason; and 3 siblings.

    Our family is blessed to know that our mother is now walking alongside other loved ones who entered the gates of Heaven before her. However, we are assured that her greatest joy is being in the presence of our Savior Jesus Christ in her Eternal Home. The below words from a favorite family hymn, I Come to The Garden Alone, reflect the joy she is now experiencing: "And He walks with me, and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own, and the joy we share as we tarry there none other has ever known."

    We want to express our great gratitude to the staff at Heritage Woods of Flora, Flora Gardens Care Center, and Clay County Hospice for their wonderful facilities and the excellent care and compassion they showed to our mother during her last few years and days.

    He married Joann Wells on February 16,1952 in Noble. She preceded him in death on October 27, 2009.

    Arthur had worked for Prairie Farms. He was a coin collector and coin hunter who spent many hours with his metal detector in search of rare coins. Arthur was also a fisherman and enjoyed fishing with his family and friends. He loved his grandchildren and watching them grow up.

    He is survived by his son, Bill Fulk and wife Cindy of Belleville, IL, son, Gary Fulk of Noble, daughter, Cindy Baize and husband Danny of Noble, brother, William Fulk, sister, Pauline Thomason, sister, Lemora VanDyke, sister, Shelby Snider and grandchildren, Sarah Fulk, Elena Fulk, Josh Fulk, Austin Rhoads and Haley Rhoads.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 57years Joann Fulk, son David Leo Fulk, grandson Adam Ross Fulk and infant brother Franklin R. Fulk.

    Arthur married Wells, Carolyn Joan on 16 Feb 1952 in Noble, Richland County, Illinois.     Survivors include her father; mother; a son, James Holste; brothers Larry Pierce, Tony Fulk, & Frank Fulk; seven sisters, Linda Bosley, Margie Moore, Dianne Miselbrook, Kathy Schoonover, Cindy Cook, Lois Martin, and Lisa Fulk; and two grandchildren.

    Preceding her in death were her husband, a brother, Robert Bateson, and a sister, Connie Carter.

    Funeral services were Feb. 28, 2011 at the Neal Funeral Home with burial in Old Union Cemetery in rural Louisville.
