Mrs. Florence Bernice Eakins, age 81, of the LaFax area died Thursday, April 25, 2002 in Delnor-Community Hospital, Geneva, IL. Florence was born on September 9, 1920 in Xenia, IL. The only child of the late Mayo and the late Sylvia (Luke) Ashbrook. She graduated from Flora High School, Flora, IL.
On October 29, 1943 she married the one and only love of her life, Victor S. Eakins. Soon after they began their life together they moved away from their family and friends of southern Illinois north to the Fox Valley area.
Florence and Victor worked hard and saved until they were able to purchase their own farm west of Geneva on Brundige Road in 1955. Side by side, together with their three sons, they operated the farm while Victor also worked full-time for Burgess-Norton Mgf. in Geneva. Tragedy struck on April 24, 1962 when Victor was killed in a farming accident. Florence and the boys continued to successfully operate their farm.
Florence's greatest pride and joy came from her sons and their families. She also thoroughly loved her pets, gardening, baking and decorating special occasion cakes for everyone. She enjoyed sewing, other needlecrafts and was always ready to hop in the car to go "rummage sale-ing" across the countryside.
Florence had worked for the telephone company in southern Illinois, Shakeproff and for The Kane County Flea Market before beginning her career as tax consultant spanning many years for H&R Block and Northerwestern Illinois Farm Bureau Farm Management.
Florence was a member of the Geneva United Methodist Church for 47 years, where she taught Sunday school and participated in various ministries. She will also be remembered as a 4-H leader and a member of the "Sunset Swingers" of Elburn. For many years she was Co-Superintendent of Horticulture and Agronomy at the Kane County Fair. Most recently she was a charter resident of Brighton Gardens in St. Charles where she was best known for her beautiful smile.
