    Walter Payne, 78, Flora, died November 1, 1990 at Clay County Hospital in Flora, IL.

    He was bron July 21, 1912 in Clay City, the son of Crawford and Bertha Earhart Payne. He married Bernice Yauch in Clay County in 1956. She preceded him in death in 1979.

    He was a laborer in construction. He was a member of Flora Eagles, a WWII veteran, member of Flora VFW, and Flora American Legion.

    Survivors include two daughters, Rhonda Cox and Tammy Martin; three brothers, Sherman, Glenn, and Earl; three sisters, Edna Wyatt, Amy Brabouski, and Dorothy Brown. He has 3 grandchildren and one step-grandchild.

    He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and two brothers.

    Funeral services were graveside at the Clay City Cemetery with full military rites.

    Hosselton, Bookhout, Engelmeier Funeral Home was in charge of services.

    Military Service:
    Entered active service as a draftee on March 4, 1943 at Camp Grant, Illinois. Selected for the Medical Department, completed basic training, and qualified in the military occupational specialty of Medical Technician (MOS 409). Departed the Continental U.S. on October 9, 1943 bound for the European Theater of Operations. Assigned to and served with the 1,000-bed 79th General Hospital at Waringfield, United Kingdom. Honorably discharged as a Technician Fifth Grade on March 12, 1946 at the Separation Center, Camp Grant, Illinois. Earned the Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal.
