    Waldine “Hattie” Hock Rice, 95, of Johnston City, passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at Helia Healthcare in Energy.

    Waldine was a member of the Herrin Free Methodist Church and attended the Ferges Free Methodist Church.

    Waldine was born December 20, 1923 in Cambria, IL to Elmer D. and Edna Alice (Williams) Harvel.

    Waldine was first united in marriage with Ernest Hock on September 21, 1940 in Jackson, MO. He preceded her in death on February 7, 1990. She then married Clyde Rice on March 27, 1993 in Herrin. He preceded her in death on May 27, 1999.

    Surviving are, three sisters and a brother-in-law, Helen Jenkins of Marion, Sue and Jerry Ranchino of Ferges, Bernita Cross of Harrisburg; step son, Wendell Rice; and several nieces and nephews.

    She was preceded in death by her husbands, parents, sister, Virginia Waldron and seven brothers, Les Harvel, Dale Harvel, William H. Harvel, Joe Harvel, Carl Harvel, Robert Harvel, Raymond Harvel.

    Services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2019 at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin with Pastor David Sain and Pastor Ted Cunningham officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Carterville.

    December 11, 1944 - November 8, 2020

    Bernita Fae “Tootie” Cross, 75 of Herrin, passed away at 11:31 a.m., Sunday, November 8, 2020 at Harrisburg Medical Center.

    Tootie was born December 11, 1944 in Herrin to Elmer and Edna (Williams) Harvel.

    Tootie was retired having been employed by Cabot Industries in Tuscola for many years. She attended the Ferges Free Methodist Church before her health began to fail. She was a 1962 graduate of Herrin High School. She enjoyed playing cards and watching her soaps on the television.

    Tootie is survived by two daughters, Michelle Statler of Carterville and Tonya (David) Frick of Johnston City; one son, Sean Cross of Fox Lake; four grandchildren, Talyn and Dalton Frick of Johnston City, Chelsea David of Carterville and Dustin David of Fox Lake; two sisters, Helen Jenkins of Marion and Sue (Jerry) Ranchino of Johnston City. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

    Tootie was preceded in death by her parents; seven brothers, Joe, Carl, Les, Raymond, Bob, Dale and Bill Harvel; two sisters, Waldine “Hattie” Rice and Virginia Harvel-Waldron.

    Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Thursday, November 12, 2020 at Pyle Funeral Home in Johnston City with Pastor Jimmy Russell officiating. Interment will follow in Herrin City Cemetery.

    Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

    Pyle Funeral Home in Johnston City is entrusted with the arrangements.
