    Notes:

    Mrs. Bertha Edith Payne 83, formerly of Clay City, died at 12:30 this morning at the Burgin Nursing Home in Olney.

    She was born in Wayne County June 3, 1887.

    Surviving are six sons, Robert of Sailor Springs, Sherman of Flora, Earl E. of Salem, Walter, Glenn and Ralph, all of Clay City; three daughters, Mrs. Charles (Edna) Wyatt of Jefferson, Ore., Mrs. Edwin (Amy) Grabowski and Mrs. Steve (Dorothy) Brown, both of Decatur.

    Also surviving are a brother and two sisters, Oggie Earhart of Utica, Mrs. Everett Brown of Arthur and Mrs. Amy Brown of Belleflower, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

    She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clay City.

    Services will be at the First Baptist Church in Clay City, with burial in the Clay City Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cardascio-Easley Funeral Home in Clay City , then the body will be taken to the church.

Qualified in the military occupational specialty of Automatic Rifleman (mos 746). Departed the Continental U.S. on June 18, 1942 bound for the Pacific Theater of Operations where he participated in the Aleutian Islands Campaign with unknown units. Returned stateside on March 23, 1944 where he was assigned to and served with Company C, 195th Infantry Training Battalion, at Camp Blanding, Florida. Honorably discharged as a Technician Fourth Grade on October 6, 1945 at same station. Earned the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 1 bronze battle star, and the WWII Victory Medal.

    Walter Payne, 78, Flora, died November 1, 1990 at Clay County Hospital in Flora, IL.

    He was bron July 21, 1912 in Clay City, the son of Crawford and Bertha Earhart Payne. He married Bernice Yauch in Clay County in 1956. She preceded him in death in 1979.

    He was a laborer in construction. He was a member of Flora Eagles, a WWII veteran, member of Flora VFW, and Flora American Legion.

    Survivors include two daughters, Rhonda Cox and Tammy Martin; three brothers, Sherman, Glenn, and Earl; three sisters, Edna Wyatt, Amy Brabouski, and Dorothy Brown. He has 3 grandchildren and one step-grandchild.

    He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and two brothers.

    Funeral services were graveside at the Clay City Cemetery with full military rites.

    Hosselton, Bookhout, Engelmeier Funeral Home was in charge of services.

    Military Service:
    Entered active service as a draftee on March 4, 1943 at Camp Grant, Illinois. Selected for the Medical Department, completed basic training, and qualified in the military occupational specialty of Medical Technician (MOS 409). Departed the Continental U.S. on October 9, 1943 bound for the European Theater of Operations. Assigned to and served with the 1,000-bed 79th General Hospital at Waringfield, United Kingdom. Honorably discharged as a Technician Fifth Grade on March 12, 1946 at the Separation Center, Camp Grant, Illinois. Earned the Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal.

    He owned and operated the Standard Station in Clay City for many years.

    He was a member of the Clay City Baptist Church, the Clay City Oddfellows, the VFW in Flora, the Clay City American Legion. He was also a World War II veteran.

    Surviving, in addition to his wife; are four brothers, Sherman, Walter, Earl, and Glen Payne; three sisters, Edna Wyatt, Amy Grabowski and Dorothy Brown.

    He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

    Funeral services were held in the Clay City Baptist Church with burial in the Clay City Cemetery.

    Mr. Payne was born April 9, 1927 in Clay County, the son of Crawford and Bertha Earhart Payne. He married Famie Gray January 11, 1953.

    He was a retired meat cutter and member of Clay City First Baptist church. He was a U. S. Army veteran, and a member of Olney Oddfellows, and Sailor Springs American Legion.

    Survivors include his wife; a daughter Earlene Cunningham; a son, David Payne; a brother, Sherman Payne; a sister, Dorothy Brown; and two grandchildren.

    Preceding him in death were his parents, four brothers, Robert, Walter, Glen, and Ralph; and two sisters, Amy Grabowski and Edna Wyatt.

    Funeral services were held at Clay City First Baptist Church with burial in Clay City Cemetery.

    Graveside military rites were handled by the Sailor Springs American Legion.

    Summers-Kistler Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

    David W Payne, 62, of Olney, passed away on Friday, February 1, 2019 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, IN.

    David was born on October 11, 1956 in Flora, IL, the son of Earl Edwin and Famie Pearl (Gray) Payne.

    David grew up in Clay City, IL and moved to Salem, IL .
    In his younger years he enjoyed fishing and Classic Rock music.

    David is survived by his sister, Earlene (Dave) Cunningham of Olney; nephews, Jason (Shana) and Aaron; great-niece, Avalyn; great-nephew, Donovan.

    A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Bible Fellowship Church in Olney. Cremation Rites were accorded.
