    Emma Jean Lawson, 96, of Peoria and formerly of Clay City, died at 11:01 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Apostolic Christian Skylines in Peoria.

    Mrs. Lawson was born December 29, 1914, in Clay City, the daughter of Robert Earl and Maggie (Raley) Duff. She married Monroe Arthur Lawson on September 20, 1936, in Murphysboro. He preceded her in death on March 31, 1976.

    She was an elementary school teacher. She was a member of Clay City United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, a 50-year member of Magnolia Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary #840, elected to Outstanding Teachers of America, Unit I Clay City Garden Club and United Methodist Women.

    Mrs. Lawson is survived by her daughter, Judy A. Partain and her husband Stan, of Virginia; daughter, Sharon K. Smith and her husband, Clark, of North Carolina; son, Gary D. Lawson and his wife, Cindy, of Illinois; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, Monroe Arthur Lawson; father, Robert Earl Duff (9-26-1966); mother, Maggie "Dot" Duff (9-26-1982); sister, Helen Taylor (11-24-1982); and brother, Robert E. Duff Jr. (1-7-1996).

    Summers-Kistler Funeral Home in Clay City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Mark Canada officiating. Burial will be in Clay City Cemetery.

    Sharon was born October 11, 1947, in Clay City, Illinois, 2nd born daughter to parents Monroe and Emma Jean Lawson, who proceeded her in death along with baby brother Lawson.

    On November 27, 1971, Sharon married Clark Smith in St Louis, Missouri and remained happily wed for over 50 years. Sharon is survived by Clark, their 2 children, son David (Margaret), daughter, Jennifer (Tim), 2 grandchildren Emma and Edwin of son David, sister Judy Partain (Stan) of Lexington, VA, and brother Gary Lawson (Claudia) of Peoria, Illinois. Also surviving are 4 nephews and 2 nieces.

    After graduating from Clay City Community High School in 1965, Sharon pursued her Nursing degree from Missouri Baptist College of Nursing, graduating in 1969. She worked as a nurse in hospitals across St Louis, MO, Chicago, IL and Richmond, VA. She and Clark relocated to Chapel Hill in 1998 and lived in the Governor’s Club. She continued her nursing career as Director of Nursing at Carolina Meadows from 2001 until 2014. In 2015, she began work at Right at Home as Director of Nursing and remained there until her retirement in 2021.

    Sharon was a fun-loving, loyal, affectionate, and affirming woman. She loved her husband, children, and grandchildren, and enjoyed serving people in her community. Her laughter and personality were contagious. Sharon was a beautiful, selfless woman who always put others’ needs before her own. She treated all of her patients with the utmost care and compassion as if they were her own family.

    Sharon was an avid University of North Carolina Tar Heels fan and could often be spotted in the stands routing on her favorite teams, especially her beloved men and women’s tennis teams. She had numerous friends in the athletic department and Ram’s Club. She will be greatly missed.

    A small service will be held at Chapel Hill Cemetery where her ashes will be scattered by immediate family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made in Sharon’s honor to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center by visiting the following website:
