    Mrs. Louemma Michels, 79, of Calhoun, passed away early this morning at the Richland Memorial Hospital after a long period of illness.

    She was born on March 22, 1888, near Noble, daughter of W. E. and Lavina Patterson McDowell. She was married July 25, 1906, to Charles R. Michels, who passed away on December 10, 1951.

    She had made her home in the Calhoun neighborhood for the past 28 years and prior to that, lived in Olney for many years.

    She was a member of the Calhoun Methodist church.

    She is survived by two daughters and three sons. They are Mrs. Dorothy Wilkerson of Calhoun, Mrs. Tressie Scott of St. Louis, Myrl and Joe Michels of Calhoun, and Bert Michels of Olney. A brother, Than McDowell of Calhoun, and a sister, Mrs. Zadie Fulk of Olney, also survive. Ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren survive.

    Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of the Summers-Rainey Funeral Home with Rev. Leland Hooper of Clay City in charge. Burial will be at Haven Hill cemetery. I Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Friday.

    He had recently been a resident of United Methodist Village, Lawrenceville.

    He graduated from Olney Township High School in 1926 and at an early age worked at the Olney Daily Mail as carrier, printer and later a reporter. He attended Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, majoring in history and political science. He taught in Richland County schools at one time and later taught local history several terms at Olney Central College. He was knowledgeable on the subject of local area history and was known as Richland County's "unofficial historian".

    In 1933 he was elected to the Richland County Board of Supervisors and later was a social worker with the Illinois Emergency Relief Commission. On June 15, 1938 he was appointed supt. of public aid and retired in 1967 after 32 years of service. Upon his retirement, he became a reporter-feature writer for the Olney Daily Mail, retiring in March of 1975.

    In 1973, Mr. Michels was elected to the Olney Township Board of Auditors and served 4 1/2 years. An active member of the First United Methodist Church of Olney, he taught the mens class for several years and was formerly on the administrative board. He has also been a lay church speaker in Richland and Jasper counties.

    Mr. Michels was a charter member of Calhoun Ruritan Club, West Salem Masonic Lodge No. 886 and Richland Lodge No. 180, IOOF, Olney.

    Bert Michels, 72, Olney died Friday morning, January 11, 1980 at Lawrence County Memorial Hospital, Lawrenceville. He had recently been a resident of United Methodist Village, Lawrenceville.

He was also a member of the Calhoun Ruritan, Parkersburg Masonic Lodge 32nd Degree, and was president of Olney Township Mutual Fire Insurance. He was village president of Calhoun for 27 years and was former Citizen of the Year.

    Jerry was the general manager at Illinois Gas Company where he worked for 30+ years. He was an active member of the Olney Elks #926 and the Eagles Lodge #2549. Jerry enjoyed beating his friends playing cards at the Petroleum Club and dominating them in dominoes at the Elks. He served on several boards including the Olney/Noble Airport, Workforce One, and RCDC during the time in which Wal-Mart DC and the Lawrenceville prison were brought to this area. Jerry enjoyed watching sports of all kinds but was passionate about STL Cardinals baseball and U of I basketball. He took pleasure in keeping up with his grandchildren through social media.

    She was born in Olney, IL and attended East Richland High School and Deaconess Nursing School. She moved many times over the decades from Illinois to Wisconsin to Virginia and back to Illinois, raising her children while working full-time as a nurse.

    Judy was a great lover of animals and supported Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah, both financially and with volunteer time, creating many happy memories there. She also enjoyed travel with her family.

    She was loved for her kindness and compassion, along with her wit and sense of humor.
    More than anything, Judy was able to touch thousands of lives through her 50+ year career as a nurse, particularly the 34 years she spent as a hospice nurse. She worked in hospice until March 2019. Everyone knew her, and everyone will miss her.

    On Tuesday, April 30, Judy Lawrence of Glenview, Illinois passed at the age of 76 in her home surrounded by her loving family.
