    His biography was published in A History of Southern Illinois, by George Washington Smith, Chicago: Lewis, 1912, page 1707.

    Gen. Smith was well-known over Illinois on account that he was adjutant general under Gov. Yates, and later warden of the Chester penitentiary under Gov. Deneen.

    He was a veteran of the Civil war and 87 years old.


    GEN. J. B. SMITH DEAD
    Thursday of last week, Dec. 16th, Gen. J. B. Smith died suddenly at his home in Clay City. A third stroke of paralysis probably brought the end. The General had never fully recovered from the first stroke although he had been able to travel around some.

    Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Clay City M. E. church, at 2:00 o'clock, the Masonic fraternity having charge of the obsequies.

    Gen. Smith was well-known over Illinois on account that he was adjutant general under Gov. Yates, and later warden of the Chester penitentiary under Gov. Deneen.

    He was a veteran of the Civil war and 87 years old.
