    Entered active service as a draftee on February 2, 1943 at Chicago, Illinois. Selected for the Infantry, completed basic training, and qualified in the military occupational specialty of Light Truck Driver (MOS 345). Departed the Continental U.S. on March 28, 1944 bound for the European Theater of Operations. Served with unknown units till assigned to Headquarters Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd 'Marne' Infantry Division, and fought in the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. Wounded by enemy action on April 2, 1945 in vicinity of Weibersbrunn, Bavaria, Germany, and treated by the 189th General Hospital. Honorably discharged as a Private First Class on January 29, 1946 at the Separation Center, Camp Grant, Illinois. Earned the Purple Heart Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 2 bronze battle stars, and the WWII Victory Medal.

    Kenneth Dale Poppe, 70, of Van Buren, formerly of Colorado Springs, CO, passed away Monday, June 16, 2014 in Fort Smith.
    He was born April 28, 1944 in Olney, IL to the late Kenneth and Virginia Poppe.

    He graduated from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL earning his Bachelors in Agricultural Economics. He was in pharmaceutical sales, and real estate, and was a member of Saint Patrick's Catholic Church in Colorado Springs, CO and the Heritage United Methodist Church in Van Buren. He was a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, and served in military intelligence in Washington DC during the Vietnam Conflict.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Dody Jones.

    He is survived by his wife, Alta Poppe of the home; and two children, Jay Poppe and wife Cassandra of Muldrow, and Kathy Watson and husband Lee of Fort Smith; a sister, Janet Narragon and husband Marvin of Colorado Springs; and eight grandchildren; and eight grandchildren; Ryan, Virginia, Shannon, Collin, Fulton, Marialina Poppe, Zane and Pierce Watson.

    Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2014 at Heritage United Methodist Church in Van Buren, with interment to follow at noon at the Fort Smith National Cemetery, under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren, AR.

    Honorary pallbearers will be Jay Poppe, Ryan Poppe, Collin Poppe, Lee Watson, Zane Watson, and Marvin Narragon.

    Later she married David Joyner, and he preceded her in death.

    Shelley enjoyed helping people in need. She volunteered her time to charitable organizations to help older folks and those in need. She loved to read and to garden.

    Shelley is survived by her sisters, Virginia Larrimore of Clay City, Sonya Adams and husband Jerry of North Wilkesboro, NC, and Barbara Sharp and companion Joel Henshon of Brewton, AL; brother, Richard Sharp of Clay City; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

    A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, October 07, 2021 at Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home in Clay City, with a visitation beginning one hour prior.
