During that period of time he farmed, did construction work and oil field work, and adjusted crops for Country Mutual Insurance. For the next 35 years, he worked for Country Mutual Insurance.

    He was active in the IEA and NEA, the Ruritan Club, the Gideons, and the Masons.

    He was devoted to the church and attended the Congregational Christian Church where he was a teacher, a superintendent, and a deacon. He was devoted to his beloved wife Anna, who was a florist at the Olney Greenhouses, and to his children Koneta and Lanie, and their families.

    Bernard married Hesler, Anna on 28 Jun 1935 in Willow Hill, Jasper County, Illinois. Anna (daughter of Hesler, Alva Howard and Sager, Mattie F.) was born on 30 Jun 1916 in Richland County, Illinois; died on 23 Aug 2015 in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois; was buried in Hanna Cemetery, Noble, Richland County, Illinois.
