    She was born May 30, 1920 in Riverton, IA to Claude & Blanche Calkins. She married Ned Pressley Cantrell on March 22, 1941 in Pleasantville, IA. Winnie raised two sons, Gary and Mac, while working with her husband, Ned, at the Cantrell Lumber & Hardware store in Xenia. She was a pianist who returned to college in the 1960’s attaining a degree in Music Education. She taught classroom music and choirs in the North Clay School District from 1961 to 1981 and continued to substitute teaeach in Louisville and Xenia in the 1980’s. Throughout her teaching career she felt honored to be entrusted with the education and development of the generations of children she taught. Winnie helped establish and was named head of the Elementarry and Junior High Division of the Illinois Music Educators Association. She also taught summer youth music classes for two years at the University of Illinois and was named the Outstanding Music Educator for the State of Illinois in 1980. Winninie was active in the Xenia United Methodist Church and enjoyed doing volunteer work to support the Village of Xenia and the children in that town. She and Ned moved to Moscow, ID in 2004 because of her Alzheimer’s disease and to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Her family will miss her greatly.
