Supported the Royalist cause during the Civil war. As a member of the landed gentry, he had a high station in society because of the land he owned rather than any hereditary title. As the Royalists lost the war he was deprived of his land. In 1660 the son of the king seized power and returned a small portion of the confiscated lands.

Too young to serve in the Civil war, he joined the horse guards as a lieutenant in 1660. In 1665 he was asked to be a second in a duel of pistols between the Duke of Buckingham and the Earl of Shrewsbury. Neither was hurt as the bullets hit Gwilym, killing him.
