Notes:

He was born on his father's farm in Smallwood Township, Jasper County, about a quarter of a mile from the Richland county line. He attended the Fairview School. He later farmed in Jasper county and when he moved to Richland county he owned and operated a saw mill and grist mill at Wakefield.

Later on, Mr. Pottorff owned and operated a blacksmith shop, also at Wakefield, until it burned down. He then took up the carpenter trade, which he continued until his retirement at about the age of 90 years.

When, on his 100th birthday he was asked if he had any particular philosophy that accounted for the fact he had reached the age of 100, he said, "I didn't aim to live to be a hundred years old. "

George Pottorff, Richland County's oldest citizen who celebrated his 101st birthday at Richland Memorial Hospital only ten days ago on August 8, died at the hospital this morning.

He retired in 1969 from Pure Oil Company after 30 years of service. He was a long-time member and deacon of Liberty Baptist Church in Wakefield. He enjoyed going ginseng and mushroom hunting. He raised quail and pheasant to be released into the wild, and watched the birds that nested in the birdhouses around his home and fed at the feeders in the back yard. He and Evelyn hosted many family wiener roasts in the grove behind their home near Dundas. He came from a hearty German background. His father and all five children lived unusually long lives into their nineties and beyond. His father was 101 and his sister, Fay, is 100. His other siblings, Ben and Roy Pottorff and Luna Lambird, were in their late 90s.
