    He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture, and was commissioned in 1942 as an officer in the U. S. Army.

    He served in World War II, commanding Company L. 30th Infantry Division through France, Holland, Belgium, & Germany. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star with two oak leaf clusters, the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman's badge, Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation medal, & five campaign medals during World War II.

    He was inducted into the Infantry Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame at Fort Benning, GA. in 1969. He served with the 34th Infantry regiment, 24th Infantry Division in Korea in 1956, and Headquarters Military Assistance Command, Vietnam in 1971, as well as the Chief of Command Information in the Chief of Information, Department of the Army prior to his retirement March, 1973.
