    A 1933 graduate of the University of Illinois, entered active service as a draftee on October 14, 1942 at Chicago, Illinois. Honorably discharged as a Corporal from Company Z, 3rd Engineer School Regiment on June 8, 1943 by reason of desire to accept a commission. On June 9, 1943, entered the Officer Candidate School program. Attended the Corps of Engineers Officer Candidate School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia; the Heavy Equipment School at Richmond, Virginia; and the Fire Prevention School at New Orleans. Departed the Continental U.S. on November 14, 1943 bound for the European Theater of Operations. Served overseas as a fire fighting unit commander and later, stateside, as an aviation engineering unit commander. Earned The American Campaign Medal, The European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and The WWII Victory Medal. Honorably separated from active duty as a First Lieutenant with the 246th Army Air Force Base Unit on March 19, 1946 at Patterson Field, Ohio.

    Notes:

    Lee Ellmore Kinnaman. son of Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Kinnaman, who reside at the old Kinnaman homestead just north of Flora, died at the Flora hospital June 18, after on Illness of about two weeks' duration. He was born Oct. 2S, 1925, making him 7 months and 23 days of age at the time of death.

    The funeral was conducted at the home Saturday afternoon, June 19, by Rev. C. L. Doty, pastor of the First Christian church. Burial was made at Elmwood cemetery.

    The following out-of-town relatives were here for the obsequies: A. C. Kinnaman of St. Louis, Mo.; C. H. Kinnaman of Decatur; Mrs. Fred Monical of East St. Louis; Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Nash and daughter, Vera, of Madison; Mr. and Mrs. Durland Drake of Washington, Ind.

    Notes:

    While attending his senior year of high school in 1944, Don was drafted into the U.S. Army (during World War II) and became part of the 232nd Field Artillery Battalion, 42nd Infantry (Rainbow) Division. He was sent to the European Theater of Operations and his division moved through France and Germany, to the Austrian Rhineland. He went on to a career with the Flora Post Office as a rural mail carrier. He was a longtime and faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Flora where he and Gerry had been a part of the Win-A-Couple Sunday School Class in the past. Don was a member of Clay County Hospital Auxiliary, Flora American Legion Post #14, and Flora VFW Post #3999. He was a past member of Rural Letter Carriers, Flora Airport Authority, a Trustee for Harter Township Cemeteries, and had also served as a member of Flora ESDA for 35 years.

    Military Service:
    Entered active service as a draftee on February 8, 1944 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. After training as a field lineman (MOS 641), joined the 232nd Field Artillery Battalion, 42nd Infantry (Rainbow) Division at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma. Departed the Continental U.S. on January 6, 1945 and entered combat in vicinity of Lutzelstein, France on February 17, 1945. Fought in France, Germany and Austria through the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. After V-E Day, returned to the U.S. and stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Awarded The American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 2 bronze battle stars, WWII Victory Medal and The Good Conduct Medal. Honorably discharged as a Private 1st Class on April 25, 1946.

    Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 17, 2014, at Elmwood Cemetery in Flora, Ill., with full military rites being preformed by the Flora American Legion.
