    Notes:

    Heaven opened its gates for Paul R. Swinson on September 11, 2010.

    There will be no visitation. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, September 17, 2010, at Dundas Cemetery. Full military rites will be given. Summers-Kistler Funeral Home in Olney is in charge of arrangements.

    Mr. Swinson was the beloved husband of his wife, Betty, for 61 years.

    He will always be remembered for his humble ways, his wonderful smile and his blue eyes. He passed those eyes on to his four children, Rita, Joe, Pete and John.

    He is the beloved grandfather of seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

    Mr. Swinson was preceded in death by his parents, Omer and Bernice Swinson, as well as four brothers, George, Jim, Ray and Albert Swinson.

    He is survived by his brother, Glenn Swinson and wife, Taddy, of Brush, Colo.

    In his early life he loved basketball, which gave him the drive to wake up every day and hitch-hike from Dundas to Olney for his entire senior year of high school, so he could play for the Tigers. That year, 1942, he was lucky enough to share the victory of qualifying and playing at state.

    After he finished high school, he decided to join the United States Army in 1943. He was an Army medic and a veteran of World War II.

    He worked in the engineering department of the Illinois Central Railroad for 28 years, and was the co-owner of Dundas General Store from 1954-1967.

    He was a devoted member of Immanuel United Methodist Church for 36 years, where he also enjoyed teaching his adult Sunday School class.

    Mr. Swinson was also a member of the VFW and American Legion.

    Our world will not be the same without him, but we will all be together again in God's time and until then, he will be in our hearts forever.

    Memorials may be made to Immanuel United Methodist Church or Hospice of Southeastern Illinois.
