    John's first wife, Phoebe Colclasure, another Hoosier native, had died five years earlier and was the mother of all John's five children. The whereabouts of their oldest, Samuel, is unknown. At the age of 16 was he off somewhere or had died young. Thomas Hollowell[t][c] is in neighboring Orange County with his family, living near his cousins from the family of Joseph Chenoweth. Thomas had married Malinda Blackburn in Orange County in 1848. They are found with five children in the Census.

    "Notes for SAMUEL 'SAMMIE' COLCLASURE: Xenia - Then and Now 1834 - 1984
    Samuel Colclasure (1831 - 1905) born near Xenia, his wife Sarah Elizabeth (Baity) Colclasure (1840 - 1928) also born near Xenia. Samuel enlisted for combat duty in the Civil war on August 9, 1862 at the age of 28. He was mustered in at Camp Marshall, Salem, Ill. on Aug 16, 1862. He served under Ge. Sherman and was attached to the 111 Illinois Infantry. He was on the famous march from Atlanta to the sea. On May 21, 1865 marched in the Grand Review Victory Parade in Washington D.C. He arrived back to his home at Xenia July 1, 1865.

    As a boy he was kind and loving, growing to manhood served his country in her hour of peril as a volunteer, for which we today honor him. Knowing the final result of his malady, he gave his life to Christ and spoke to family and pastor of his being with Christ and the angels and how beautiful and pleasant it was. We submit to God's will,

    He volunteered for service In the Regular Army of U. S. May 7, 1917.

    He sailed for Europe May 27, 1918, was assigned to 5th Division Ammunition train service. Served In offensive battle four days of St. Mihiel, Meuse, Argonne, Voseges where thousands fell each minute. With his Division,
    was under machine gun and rifle fire the last 27 days of the World War previous to the signing of the Armistice. Asslsting in taking 22 stations of the enemy and an area as large as the State of Indiana, taking 37 cannons, 461 machine guns, over 900 prisoners. This his war record as given by his officers. He lies today a hero, a martyr to our freedom. He was gassed in service and contracted Hodgkin's disease, which caused his death. He was honorably discharged and returned to ciivil pursuits of life soon to yield to the last call to bivouac for the dead.

Stationed in the U.S. until March 2, 1945 when he departed the U.S. bound for the Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations where he was assigned to the 68th Troop Carrier Squadron, 433rd Troop Carrier Group, 54th Troop Carrier Wing, 5th Air Force. Unit operated out of Clark Field, Luzon, Philippine Islands delivering ammunition, rations and other items to Filipino guerrilla forces, evacuating prisoners of war and civilian internees transporting combat units from New Guinea, The Netherlands Indies and Solomon Islands to the Phhilippine Islands and dropping rice to the leper colony on Ceylon Island. Transported organizations of 5th Air Force to Okinawa June to August 1945. Hauled occupation forces to Japan after V-J Day operating out of Tachikawa, Japan after September 1945. Earned the Air Crew Member Badge (Wings) Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 4 bronze battle stars (Western Pacific, Luzon, Southern Philippine Islands, Ryukyus), WWII Victory Medal and the Philippine Liberation Medal. Honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant on November 25, 1945 at the Separation Center, Camp McCoy, Wisconsin.
