    Military Service:
    Entered active service as a draftee on May 13, 1941 at East Saint Louis, Illinois. Completed training, assigned to the Coast Artillery, and shipped out for the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations via Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. During the attack there on December 7, 1941, suffered a concussion and emotional trauma from intense Japanese munitions explosions. Returned stateside for convalescence leave, observation and treatment. For reasons of continued poor health documented by an indorsed certificate of disability for discharge dated June 26, 1942, was honorably discharged as a Private on July 21, 1942 at Letterman General Hospital, San Francisco, California. After medical discharge from active duty, transferred to the Veterans Administration Hospital Facility at Danville, Illinois, for an extended period of follow-on medical evaluations, treatments and rehabilitation. Entitled to The American Campaign Medal, The Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal And The WWIi Victory Medal for his service within the eligibility periods for those awards.

Fought through the New Guinea and Southern Philippines Campaigns. Earned The Bronze Star Medal, The Good Conduct Medal, The American Defense Medal, The American Campaign Medal, The Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 2 bronze battle stars, the WWII Victory Medal and The Philippine Liberation Medal with 1 bronze battle star. Honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant on 19 June 1945 at the Separation Center, Fort Sheridan, Illinois.

    Notes:

    Ray was a graduate of Flora High School and served in the Army during the Korean War. He worked at J.C. Borah Motor Sales, Sparton Manufacturing, First National Bank, and retired from World Color Press in Effingham after 23 years. He was an active member in his church, St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, and was a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus for years.

    He was an avid sports fan and loved coaching his son’s ball teams. He also loved watching his Chicago Bears, Fighting Irish, and the St. Louis Cardinals. He was known for his love of gardening and raised strawberries for many years. He loved the outdoors and spent a lot of time teaching his sons to hunt and fish and enjoyed his fall trips to the river with his daughter looking for hickory nuts.

    Raymond “Ray” R. Winka, age 90, of Flora, Illinois, passed away early Sunday morning, December 29, 2019.
