    Phyllis Mae Vail, age 85, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Friday, September 11, 2020, at Flora Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.

    She was born July 27, 1935, in Geff, Illinois, the daughter of Joseph Martin and Addie Ozella (Plumley) Eckelberry. She was united in marriage to Edwin “Ed” Arkel Vail on November 3, 1951, in Flora, and together they shared 52 years of marriage until his death February 10, 2004.

    Phyllis was baptized at Red Brush Christian Church and was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening and time spent traveling with Ed to Texas during the winters. Her greatest passion was her children and grandchildren and she will be remembered as a dedicated CNA and caregiver.

    She is survived by a son: Dennis (Carla) Vail of Pesotum; 2 daughters: Christine (Jim) Hallett of Savannah, Tennessee, and Patsy White of Effingham; 9 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister: Rhesa Eckelberry of Flora; and many nieces and nephews also survive.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Edwin Vail; a son: Jeffrey Vail; a son-in-law: Barry White; a grandson: James Robert Hallett; brothers: Joseph Robert Eckelberry, Edward Lee Eckelberry, Clifford Ray Eckelberry, James Oren Eckelberry, William Olen Eckelberry, and Kenneth Eckelberry; and sisters: Marjorie Kirkman, Melba Rowden, and Thelma Furlow.

    A graveside ceremony will be held 3 p.m. Friday, September 18, 2020, at Bunker Cemetery in Rinard, with George Coble officiating.

    Joseph Robert Eckelberry, 81, of Flora, Illinois, passed away at 3:30 p.m. on July 18, 2019, at Clay County Hospital in Flora, Illinois. Joe was born on September 11, 1937, in Rinard, Illinois, to Joseph Martin and A. Ozella (Plumley) Eckelberry.

    He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from which he retired on March 3, 1975. On October 12, 1978, Joe married Louise Guinn in Louisville, IL.

    After his retirement from the Navy, he worked for Bailey Farms in Louisville, IL, for many years. He loved hunting, fishing, turkey hunting, and gardening. Joe had a heart of gold and was always helping someone.

    Joe is survived by his wife, Louise Eckelberry of Flora, IL; many nieces and nephews; sisters, Phyllis Vail of Flora, IL, and Rhesa Eckelberry of Flora, IL.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and three sisters.

    Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 24, 2019, at Faith Tabernacle in Flora, IL. Interment will immediately follow at Bunker Cemetery in Rinard, IL, where full military rites will be accorded. Visitation will be from 6 -8 p.m., Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at Faith Tabernacle in Flora.

    Expressions of sympathy should take the form of donations to the Disabled American Veterans.

    Jim was an active member of Old Union Missionary Baptist Church in Mount Vernon. He had served as a volunteer firefighter with both the Cisne and Dix Fire Departments. Jim enjoyed singing with the gospel group, Men of the King. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed spending time with the Alabama boys. Jim also enjoyed selling watermelon and all other kinds of produce. He loved and enjoyed spending time with his family, but his grandchildren were the apple of his eye.
