He operated a Naval Recruiting Station for 15 years. He wrote a syndicated newspaper column called "Coin Chatter" for many years. He was the Editor of the Disabled American Veterans Sate of Illinois newsletter; member of the International Precious Metals Analyst Board; instructor at OCC regarding U. S. Coins and coin collecting.

    Mr. Smith was a life member in the following organizations, American Numismatic Association, Illinois Numismatic Association, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled Veterans, AmVets, Masonic Lodge #140, Masonic Lodge #362, Swords of Bunker Hill, and Veterans Service Officer for Downstate Illinois.
