• Notes

  Berlin Pierce was born to Chauncey Pierce, presumably in Gibson County, Indiana, but possible in Worchester area of Massachusetts. He apprenticed as a blacksmith in Princeton during the 1850s. He then went to Visalia, California where he operated a blacksmith shop named "Birley and Pierce". (It is mentioned in a History of Tulare County). After the death of his brother John, Berlin came to Clay County and married his sister-in-law Julia. He helped her raise her children with John. Together they had two sons, Charles Marion (1868 – 1943) and Henry Burr (1870 – 1965). He lived at what is now 994 Bunchberry Road, Clay City, IL 62824.
