"RAIN"

by John Brewer Gibson (1907-1983)


When Sol arose to light the day,

His rays from us were hidden;

A moving canopy of gray

Had come to us unbidden.

As day advanced, the clouds did scud,

And rain began descending

Until by noon the full-grown flood

Gave sign of no short ending.

The afternoon wears slowly on,

No thought our wrath assuaging,

The rain-clouds now are nearly gone

And all the brooks are raging.

The level lands which border these

Present a view appalling;

To me, who thought to cross with ease,

The spectacle is galling.

So now I stand beside the pane,

My thumbs and fingers twiddling:

Me thinks I’ll fix the fire again

And spend the evening fiddling!
